- Over 7 days of overland driving with 5 hours per day, or a 5-to-10-day trip of continuous self-driving,
- 2-5 days continuous riding with about 5-6 hours each day,
- horseback-riding of from 1-2 days with about 4-6 hours each day,

Level 4 (“rigorous”)
- over 5 days of continuous low-altitude hiking during a trip with about 5-6 hours hiking each day,
- or 4-6 days continuous trekking at altitude 2500-3900m and about 5-6 hours each day,
- Self driving trip over 10 days,
- 6-10 days of continuous biking with about 6-7 hours each day, altitude 1500-2500
- horseback-riding trip of between 3-6 days with about 5-6 hours each day,
or the similar effort involved
Level 5 (“challenging”)
- over 7 days continuous trekking at an altitude of 3000-5500m and/or more then 6 hours trekking each day,
- over 8 days of continuous biking with about 6-8 hours each day, altitude 2500-5000
- horseback-riding trip over 7days with about 6 hours each day
or the similar effort involved
NOTE
Many excursions which typically feature 9 or more days of touring with about 8(+) hours of walking per day are rated “rigorous” Though they do not contain overly-demanding treks, these trips are rated rigorous because of the extended itinerary and difficult travel conditions. The journey might involve consecutive days of driving or camping. When outside of common destinations the journey will stay at guesthouses, home stays, and\or camp. These journeys are best for sightseeing enthusiasts, who want a more complete exposure to China.
